She is finished…. The biggest machine quilting project I have ever attempted. I decided to quilt it with a dense bubble style background filler so that the appliqué would pop. All the appliqué has been outline quilted, then I added a quarter inch outline before filling the negative space with bubbles, feathers and scrolls.

I really enjoyed making this lovely design, using all my favourite blue fabrics. I had to extend , change and create new designs using Yoko Saito’s original pattern so that it became a queen size quilt. My border treatment is very different and I think it adds to the delicate feel of the appliqué design. The background and border fabric are Japanese yarn dyes, with the majority of appliqué in the same fabric style. I added a few printed cottons here and there from my stash.

The enormous amount of work has been well worth the effort.
You have created a truely exceptional quilt. ❤️👍

Your finished quilt is beautiful Lyn! It’s so delicate!
As usually incredibly fine work and very artistic. Love the choice of fabric and the many decorative flowers. Quilting is amazing. You are so talented!

Love how the consistent echo around the appliqué before the background fill allows both the appliqué and fill to shine. It’s the perfect blend to keep it from feeling over quilted. And the border treatment is exquisite. Thanks for sharing your beautiful quilt.

Thankyou for your lovely comments. I was very pleased with how the appliqué pops out because of the quilting. It takes pride of place in my guest bedroom.

I think you have the best technique I have ever seen.
Your designs are perfect even small and I am really amazed because I just begin the same and the more I go, the more I find difficulties.
I use Quiltmania booklet with patterns and it is not correct. The drawings don’t connect well. I have to correct them.
The technique is not easy: a single design is difficult to follow.
Did you take a single piece of background? I don’t see any seams.
I wish I will be your neighbour to ask advice now and then!!
BUT, I am in France! Don’t dream Martine…
So, my sincere congratulations from a big fan.

Hi Martine,
Thankyou for your lovely comments. The imaginary Garden quilt is a labour of love, but well worth the effort. The background fabric is in two pieces. I joined my fabric down the centre because the fabric pattern ran vertically in my background fabric. I also had to redraw the quiltmania pattern pieces to make them fit, and I made some changes to the design as I went. It is frustrating when you buy an expensive pattern and it doesn’t line up.
Because I wanted it to fit a queen size bed, I made it larger by adding extra floral groups.
I hope you enjoy the process. It is exciting when you see the design grow in your chosen colours and fabrics.
Kind regards,
Lyn

Thank you for your answer.I have the same problem with the patterns. They don’t line up.
I have also a problem to find a good background. I found one but too beige. I am searching something else.
