‘Utsukushi Omoide – Beautiful Memories’
This quilt was made after a trip to Japan.
Inspiration came from a man hole cover depicting cherry blossoms in Ueno Park, carved ‘mon’ symbols in the Meiji Shrine, Tokyo and cranes painted on Osaka Castle.
The Japanese yarn dyed cotton was purchased during the trip. The design is needle turn appliquéd with free motion quilting.
At the 2019 Canberra Quilters Annual Exhibit it was awarded Best Use of Colour, First in small quilts professional and Bernina Best of Show.
‘Flower’s for Zoe’
Each square is machine appliquéd using blanket stitch then free motion machine quilted. The blocks are joined using quilt-as-you-go technique and the scalloped outside border is foundation paper pieced. It is for my granddaughter as she has progressed into her big girl bed. This quilt was awarded Best use of batik fabric and First place in large quilts professional at the Canberra Quilters 2019 Annual exhibition.
‘Subtle Japan’
The lovely pale colours and hues of Japanese yarn-dyed fabrics were the inspiration for this quilt, along with the work of Yoko Saito. The symmetrical pattern was needle turn appliquéd and enhanced by the free motion quilting designs.
The quilt was awarded first place Small quilts professional at Canberra Quilters 2018 annual exhibit and was voted viewers choice.
It was also chosen as part of the Canberra Quilters Best of the Best display at AQC in April 2019.
‘Auntie Pearlie’s Supper Cloth’
This linen supper cloth was hand embroidered by my Great Auntie in the 1970’s, as a gift for my glory box. Over the years it was hardly used and spent it’s life folded in the linen cupboard.. I decided to try some free motion quilting using my Sweet 16, treating it as a whole cloth quilt. It now hangs proudly in my hallway.
It was awarded the excellence in domestic machine quilting in the Canberra Quilters 2018 annual exhibit and third place in small quilts professional.
Reece Scannell Inspiration
Trying something different. I started with a monochrome panel designed by Reece Scannell, using this as a base to add colour and texture by using batik fabrics. All the batiks are raw edge machine appliqued, then highlighted with machine quilting. This piece has been framed and hangs behind glass to look like a painting.
The Farmer’s Wife Quilt
This quilt was based on squares from ‘The Farmers Wife Sampler Quilt’ by Laurie Aaron Hird. All blocks were machine pieced, using the paper foundation technique. The large borders provided the opportunity for quilting curved feather designs and incorporating a secondary circular pattern with the quilting. It was displayed in AQC Melbourne in 2017 as part of Canberra Quilters display in the Best of the Best Exhibit.
Wool Felt Appliqué
Experimenting with wool felt appliqué and embroidery….lots of fun, a few challenges and happy with the results.
Mum’s Poppy Quilt
